Linemen on Tandem Bicycles: College Football's Next Big Trend

By Adam Kramer(Featured Columnist) on March 28, 2012

Pop quiz, hot shot. A tandem bicycle is headed east going approximately 17 miles per hour. On the other end, a Smart Car just turned out of a McDonald’s parking lot and is now headed west going 19 miles per hour. In less than three minutes, the tandem bike and the Smart Car will collide. What will the damage be?

In most cases, the clear answer would be “Oh my God, that’s awful, advantage Smart Car.” This is not most cases, however.

The tandem bicycle is being ridden by two Michigan linemen who weigh a combine 610 pounds. These two linemen, Taylor Lewan and Graham Glaslow, are clearly not the average rider and would absolutely destroy a small vehicle in this hypothetical scenario. They are also dressed in hilarious tandem bicycle gear. This does not at all impact this mock collision—it’s just a casual observation. It also reminds me of one of my favorite Family Guy bits of all-time.

If linemen riding tandem bicycles is the next great trend in the Big Ten, then we’re all in for a magnificent treat. Urban Meyer, not to be outdone, is having some of the brightest engineers at Ohio State construct a bicycle that will hold all five starting linemen at once.

It will be called the Meyer Mobile, similar in some ways (not at all) to the Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile, and it will feature 1,500 pounds of large men being held up by very little.
