When Steve Morvant arrives for work at the Thibodaux auto-care shop he owns, he parks his yellow smart car next to a row of pickup trucks.

He’s owned the car for a little more than a year, since he wrecked his motorcycle not far from the Hickory Street business.

“My family didn’t want me to get another motor bike,” Morvant said. “I drove this, and I fell in love with it.”

Morvant also is a Thibodaux Volunteer firefighter, and firefighters always know when he’s arrived because they can see his bright yellow car through the haze of smoke, he said.

A student at Nicholls State University also drives a yellow smart car, and Morvant said they wave at each other whenever they pass.

Morvant, who also owns a truck, said his car isn’t the most common choice of automobile in Lafourche Parish, but his friends are often surprised how spacious it is when they sit inside. He said he forgets how small it is and laughs at its size when he sees his wife drive it.

Morvant said it rides well, and it’s sturdier than it looks.

“People laugh at it sometimes,” he said. “But I laugh at them at the gas pump.”
