Calgary International Airport (YYC) is introducing ‘smart cars’ to its fleet of airside escort vehicles. The smart cars have 3-cylinder engines and average 5.3 litres of gasoline per 100 kilometres, making it possible to drive the length of the airport's planned new 14,000 foot runway 148 times on one tank of gas."These new smart cars will play an important role in reducing gas consumption and our environmental footprint," says Garth Atkinson, president and CEO of Calgary Airport Authority."We are always looking for new forward-thinking ways to improve efficiency and I believe that these new vehicles will be a great investment for our airport.”The Airport Development Program includes the construction of a new 14,000 ft runway and a new international concourse, adding 22-new gates at YYC and doubling the size of the existing terminal building.
