I recently had my local Boundary MB service department fix my non-starting 2006 CDI Smart. It turned over fine but wont "fire". "Your main computer is fried and it fried your fuel pump too" said the drooling service writer... repair bill $2800.00! Okay...sell one kid, fair enough. Now only 700 km later.. engine starts but when I engage reverse (yes I stepped on the brake) I get a 0 then I got three nice lines. I also got a warning and check engine indicator. So I pushed it back into the garage. Any body have any ideas? My old 1976 500 Cu Inch Eldorado Cadillac is looking like an economy car... But I still have faith in my Smart.Carl

A code reader would be helpful at this point. Without that, anything we suggest is a blind guess. But if I were willing to bet on it, it is likely something to do with the clutch actuator. Perhaps when replacing the MEG the service tech didn't properly seat the big connector to it? If you can get the car in the air, remove the rear panels, the left rear wheel and the arch liner, and inspect the various wire bundles going to the gear box and actuator. You may have to cut some "protective" tubing away. If you see any bare or cut wires, that may be the culprit. A clutch actuator fault is usually a P0702 trouble code.

Carl,Your "main computer" the dealer referred to is the SAM (Signal Acquisition Module) the Fuse Box under the dash on the drivers side.It is fairly common to hear of the electrical connector to the fuel pump at the SAM to be overheated or burnt, there are a couple of threads on how to repair it on the site.In the future go see Fast Eddy not the dealer. However it is unlikely that is the cause of your 3 bars, the most common reason for 3 bars is the clutch actuator needing to be adjusted. Here is a link on how to do the adjustment.http://www.evilution.co.uk/index.php?id=533Use lots of penetrating oil on the bolts, you don't want to break a bolt off.Disconnect the battery ( you have the radio code?).You have to go to Fast Eddy or the dealer after to have the "clutch taught in" approx $120.If this doesn't fix it then it's probably chaffed wires in the area of the intercooler.Use the Search feature on this site to find more info. The chaffed wires usually cause problems when the weather is wet, you just got it out of your garage so I don't think that's your problem.Canman Edited by CANMAN
