An order of safety FortwoSeptember 26th, 2012 - AutoNews Additionally, cars that crashed into the Fortwo sustained less damage than in other crashes due to the low weight of Smart's vehicle.Tiny Smart shines in crash testsBy: Charles RennyWhen crash tests are done on new vehicles, each test involves cars of the same size and weight. In Europe, these official tests are done by EuroNCAP. Another group, the ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club), which is the German equivalent of CAA, crashed a few cars of different sizes.CRASH TESTS: Keeping an old car may just kill youCars that fit into the small (small cars) and mid-sized categories were used against each other which meant they were different weights. The ADAC findings were not unexpected and should be of great concern to the motoring public.ADAC results showed that when a larger vehicle crashed into a smaller vehicle in a modified 50% frontal off-set test, which more closely emulates real world collisions, those in the smaller car were significantly more likely to have life threatening chest injuries than “government tests.” According to ADAC, the crumple zones of the smaller car cannot absorb enough of the energy released in the incident. There was one exception in the ADAC crash study, though. The Smart Fortwo consistently protected its occupants from major injury. ADAC attributes this to the overall design of the car. The design of the Fortwo incorporates a high strength steel safety shell that “protects occupants like the hard shell around a nut” according to Mercedes-Benz, which owns the Smart brand.DESIGN: Green GOOD DESIGN awardsIn addition, the motor is at the rear of the vehicle, allowing for a more useful crumple zone up front (even the front wheels are part of the “zone”). Other occupant protection technologies are used inside to complement and enhance the protective nature of the basic structure. The German newspaper Bild commented that “Only the Smart is truly smart.”Additionally, cars that crashed into the Fortwo sustained less damage than in other crashes due to the low weight of Smart’s vehicle. This made the Fortwo the safest car to run into, as well the safest to be in.

Thanks for the read. Always being questioned about the safety since day one (April 1, 2005). I now have the article with me, while in the Smart.

:santa:
