AngieP Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Hi everyone!I'm new to Club Smart Car (although not entirely new to owning a smart) and am hoping for some advice from you seasoned users! I have a 2005 Pulse Fortwo and am having some issues with power loss - going up hills mostly. I just had the EGR completely replaced and it's a lot better now but still not what it was. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions as to what it might be? It's not in limp mode but just can't really get any faster than 30 km/h on steep hills...unfortunately, there are many where I live :(My car has 92,000 km and up until now hasn't had any major issues. Unfortunately, I know very little about cars so am not able to perform major diagnostics myself and having JUST brought it in for the EGR, I was wondering if there was anything simply I could try before I take it in for another $1,000 of work. Thanks in advance!Angie Quote
bilgladstone Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Hi Angie Your problem sounds like you have a boost leak -- an air hose or fitting somewhere between the turbo and the engine intake manifold. Leaky intercooler LINKY scroll to the bottom to see how the plastic air channel wears holes in the intercooler Service wastegate LINKY scroll down to see where to lubricate the wastegate poppet lever Cracked or plugged turbo actuator tube LINKY scroll down to see the small rubber tube in the diesel turbo picture There is also a spot on the top of the intake manifold rubber hose, where another hose crosses overtop and can chafe a hole. And check to be sure all the air hose clamps are tight. I reckon it's one of the above. If you follow the Vancouver Island sub-forum, there are often get-togethers where you can meet other Island smarties and discuss such things. LINKY HTH, Bil Quote
MikeT Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 You should connect with someone locally in the club who has a ScanGauge, and check the car out when driving. I had a problem like that once and it was a type of limp mode that does not lead to a check engine light - the clutch actuator was failing. The ScanGauge will tell the story in many cases, whether it's a boost issue or something else. Quote
