451 Diesel Question

Recommended Posts

Since there is no 451 diesel section, I will ask the question here. Does anyone know what the fault code P1408 means. My CDI has had a number of problems but its down to this one now that causes the engine to drop revs to 3000rpm after about a minute of running.I feel sure its related to the EGR system but it would help to have a bit more specific description.Grumpy-b

Thanks for the link.I was astounded by the amount of gunge that was in the EGR system not just carbon but greasy deposits as well. I have already cleaned out the casting directing the gas into the inlet, and recently took out the main EGR valve. No mean feat. This was completely clogged and was blocked. This took away the error code of P1409. Upstream of this on the exhaust side is a round chamber attached to the turbo, not easy to get out but looking at the reasonable condition spare I have (Lower mileage but also a fair amount of internal deposit) mine is probably partially blocked. But this is a terror to get at. Turbo out again I think. It is a shame that Smart dont make the codes available, they stated that I would have to take the car to them and they charge £120 an hour just to get the code. Which aparently they cant give you but can only get while online. Seems a bit far fetched as the clones of Star give such data without being connected to MB.Grumpy-b

You are unlikely to get a response. The original poster hasn’t been on the forum in over ten years.

What are you asking about...?   The STAR system or the EGR cleaning?

IF the EGR, gasoline was the best way to clean out the clogged EGR.....soaking it then using picks and small brushes makes the job go far easier. As for the STAR system, my STAR stopped programing key fobs after a while but the rest works as it should. One of the best investments you can do IF you intend on keeping a Smart Car for any length of time, IMHO.   Simply because no other system works as well, if at all on Smart Cars.

The best way to get answers for anything is to ask specific questions so others can help. The more we interact the longer this site will stay active.

Both require a subscription to read in full. 😀

I will say this is one subscription you SHOULD spend on.....it is the best library of information on anything Smart Car related by far!   One fix will pay for itself if you would normally need a shop to diagnose it for you...just saying....pay for the subscription!

I agree 100%. Evilution has a lot of really useful info on the assorted smart models from the 450 right up to and including the #1. There are numerous additions and updates to the website every year.

Another useful site is FQ101 which is free but it only has info on the 450, 451, 452 and 454. It hasn’t had any updates in several years however. They do have a Facebook page, as does evilution.
