smart142 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Here is an interesting read from SCOA.......click here Quote
MikeT Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 What it is, is a depressing read. So many people are idiots.Luckily I never have had that problem when on the road, at least not to the degree the complainants have had. It helps when the car will go fast enough to get out of packs of poor drivers. Quote
1983JZR3W Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 If people spent half the time enjoying their smarts as they do worrying about what other people think, they would all have over 100,000 miles. Quote
dmoonen Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I'm too stubborn to care about others insults, I like my smarts and they have their place in my garage. Others have their own opinions and if their minds set on it so be it. I find its kind of funny I do allot of outdoor farm shows and have my smarts on display in my booth. Coming from a crowd of farmers with big diesel 4x4's I only had one guy that hated the car and said some mean words in the past five years of doing shows. I had a hard time keeping people out of the cars and eventually gave up and kept the thing unlocked and the engine bay open. I actually sourced out a couple smarts for some farmers for grocery getters weirdly and even sold my first smart to a farmer on my booth. I find most of the hate towards the smarts is actually on the road not so much in person. On the road they think they're invincible because no one can retaliate. I think it comes with the assumption that "smarts are slow" and they just want to pass and speed by regardless of the speed your currently going. Quote
Kds Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) I've never had anyone do something stupid while driving on the road.Had plenty of curious and/or positive comments while at gas stations and parking lots though. I always try to park next to the largest vehicle when at the gas pumps just for the hell of it, and some people make jokes in good fun, which I have plenty of humorous responses for. turbomar Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I sometimes take advantage of drivers that insist on being and staying in front of me on the highway by keeping up with them no matter what speed they are doing. This gives me somewhat of a radar shield! Quote
Da Shoumi Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 The only time someone displayed his disapproval to my smart was several years ago. Some dude in a large SUV passed me on HWY 401 as I was heading for Niagara Falls, and he just gave me the finger. What I felt then was "Okay, I'm blamed for not having a large American car like anybody else". I otherwise had the best road tip ever with this car and could keep up with a friend who was driving above the legal speed limit most of the time. Quite a good memory after all and wish I could make such long trips with my smart again in the future Quote
mainefortwo Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Perhaps this is a regional thing? When my Passion Coupe first appeared in 2008, I felt like I was driving a UFO. The reception thought since then has been 99% positive with smiles, thumbs-up, waves, and the occasional picture taken from another vehicle. Often when I go to a store or stop for gas I get approached with questions like, "Is it safe?", "what do you get for mileage?", or "is there room for groceries?" none of which are negative. The funniest one was a teenager that asked me when I was pumping gas if "it was electric?". Quote
josh9120 Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 I think a lot of people in my age group are to blame for smart bashing. They usually want big trucks or cars to customize. Me personally though I love the smart car, I wouldn't want any other car 😄 Quote
6strings Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Maybe they bash because they are jealous? link Quote
Alex Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Bumper sticker I want: Don't mind me, I'm just compensating for something! I've always found that just one look at my fuel receipt leads to a whole lot of quiet from a former mocker at gas stations. Really drives it home, at their most vulnerable time. It really financially hurts some people to pay $100 or more to fill their tank, and it's entirely their choice. Quote

Leadwing Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 More simply put, "I'm compensating" ..... most people can read between the lines. Quote
krankshaft Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 I love pulling up to the diesel pump, filling up my car from near empty, putting the hose back on the pump, closing the fuel cap, heading into the store to pay and the person who started fueling up before me, is still filling up, mwah ha ha!I get a lot of stares and smiles going down the highway, but the stories about the people who don't "want to be passed by a smart car" I can total echo their sentiment, it's annoying from that perspective. Interesting side point, when I ran the numbers on total kilometers i drive on avg in a year, and compared that between the fuel mileage of my truck and my smart car, it would only take 1.25 years to pay off the purchase price of the smart car in the fuel costs difference. Comparing to my wifes olds intrigue 2 yrs. It saves me so much fuel that by not driving my truck back and forth to work the difference in fuel paid for the car in 15 months. It's like driving for free... minus the ecm flash, gauge panels, lights, k&n, Oil filter adapter, new oilpan... so i guess add a month or two Quote
