Looking for a source, or recommendation around Ottawa for a rear windshield? I'm going to do some calling tomorrow, but I understand the dealer will stick it to me. I'd like to avoid them at all possible. Thank you!

Here's the story:
My parents drove 16 hours in their Motorhome without incident. Backing into my driveway, their transmission exploded. As I called a friend with a tractor, and were towing it down the road, we stopped in case the motorhome brakes failed. We were going to get some logs to drop under the tires. My wife ran back in the smart car and pull up our driveway. Ran to the wood pile and she looked back to see the car, with our dog in the passenger seat, rolling backwards. It rolled backward straight down the driveway, across the road, into the ditch on the far side and was calmly stopped by a tree. Thankfully, everyone was mostly alright, and the only damage was the exploded rear window. My wife did put the e-brake on, but not quite enough to hold it on the incline.

Thanks again guys!

Yeah, the dog is ok. Normally we have her in the back, but for whatever reason, my wife put her in the passenger seat. Had she not done that, our dog would likely be dead, or very injured as both the window and gate were open. The only real injury was when my wife fell while trying to catch the car. She scraped her knee and elbow pretty good. There are so many ways that the whole day yesterday could have turned out so much worse.

Now I'm just dreading the cost on this rear windshield...

For those interested...Mercedes has the better price for these windshields.

Ziebart quoted me $1200 + $90 install + $30 glue

Mercedes is $465 for the windshield, but $290 for the install. I'm going to get it installed elsewhere.

Rear window on a 450 coupe is only held on with screws so pretty easy to change yourself. I recommend having an assistant to help support the glass. Safer that way.

Thanks Tolsen,

Are you saying that the glass itself is held on with screws, or is that only if I got my hands on a used one with the whole hinge assembly/wiper etc? BTW, this is what I understand that Glenn has. Figuring out the details and info via PM.

I replaced wiper motor on one a few weeks ago but complicated the installation by removing the wrong screws. The whole rear wind shield came loose from its hinges and top part. That's how I know. Found out the hard way.

A huge thanks to Smart142 and Leadwing! I now have a new'ish rear windshield and I didn't give Mercedes a penny! That makes me a happy camper.

Now...must re-train the wife on confident e-brake usage. haha
