MikeT
Flossy and I were working on the 450 database recently in order to be able to present an interactive database for the members, which should prove useful to buyers of 450s. In the course of this, I took note of the vehicle damage notes and some interesting trends were evident. First, let me put out the caveat that the source of most of the damage information is the national vehicle database, which some provinces do not participate in (NB and MB most notably) and the collision damage may be over-reported in QC. The figures below are for collisions, other forms of damage (e.g. vandalism), rebuilt from salvage, salvage or scrapped. Nevertheless, for what it is worth, here we go: QC: 523 of the 2204 smart cdis (23.7%) USA: 14 of the 111 smart cdis (12.6%) PEI: 5 of the 46 smart cdis (10.9%) SK: 22 of the 248 smart cdis (8.9%) NS: 14 of the 166 smart cdis (8.4%) BC: 123 of the 2640 smart cdis (5.5%) MB: 13 of the 265 smart cdis (4.9%) ON: 126 of the 2889 smart cdis (4.4%) AB: 48 of the 1504 smart cdis (3.2%) NB: 2 of the 116 smart cdis (1.7%) Interestingly, the numbers for both Ontario and BC are slightly suppressed because 23 of the written off cars in those provinces (combined) have been imported into Quebec and have been rebuilt and are back on the road! Quebec seems to be the only province where that scrapped car importation systematically happens, according to NVD data! The USA has at least one of these rebuilds, being the nightrun currently for auction on eBay, a car that has been written off twice!
dmoonen
I know I have about 13 taken off the road personally. Also I do know smart142 has a collection along with a bunch of other members. In fact I had a site visit (solar) at a race track and the guy had six 450's sitting in the junk pile (I may end up trading some solar for).Personally it seems like the same thing as the w124 mercs that many owners bought one to drive and one as a donor just because their parts are worth gold and hard to get. I saw this trend in 2008 when I use to part them.
MikeT
Dillen do you have the serial numbers of the smarts you have parted out? Any info on that would be really useful (you already gave me one recently).
dmoonen
Nope not a single one I pass over the ownership to the wreckers so the car doesn't even get into my name. My guys take them and down to the frame within three hours in and out the same day. The next six if I get them I can pass them along
