David_18
They still produce the 451? Or only the new one?
Huronlad
451 ED and possibly Cabrios, 453 everything else.
dmoonen
Going to get worse before they get better! Lets hope so, if not I'm not sure how they can stay in Canada
Huronlad
The 453 is selling well where it is currently available. I expect when the 453 finally gets here it will sell as well or better than the 450 or 451. Unsure what the US will think of it.
MikeT
June 2015 Canada: 63 USA: 774 Inventory management in the Canadian situation seems a bit off, or maybe Canadians are just going off the 451 with the 453 expected soon? The same thing happened at the end of the 450's run, they dried up months before the 451 started coming in, and the reason in that case was insufficient inventory. SmartED
With ICE models being built out and the ED models winding down and now finished, dealers have had not much to sell. The low numbers I think reflects the lack of product and July and August I expect will be even lower. What will be interesting to see is how much product will appear for the launch of the 453 in September. I don't recall, but it is being launched in Canada in September too isn't it? MikeT
So they say. But it can't be a good thing for the smart salespeople to have zilch to sell.
smart142
They no longer have dedicated '' smart salespeople.'' They really don't care.
MikeT
Fair, I haven't been in a smart showroom for years.
smart142
I was at the new London Mercedes dealer on Friday seeking info on the ED. Was told there is no smart specialist because there is ''no volume''. The Mercedes are flying out the door of that fancy place. They don't care about the lowly smart.

Here goes: USA: 617 Canada: 66 September: USA: 750 Canada: 39 The Canadian total is atrocious, the 453 can't get into the showrooms fast enough! Huronlad
There are a little over 300 453 in Canada, so there is at least something available to sell in November.
MikeT
November 2015:USA: 662Canada: 59 - of which 11 were 451 EDs, so 48 453s..Hmm, things are not looking all that good for the 453 so far. rosanna
It's definitely slow here in Vancouver, hopefully it will pick up =*(. I have yet to see one 453 besides my own...driving around town.
tolsen
New Smarts are unreliable and overprised piles of junk. That is why nobody buys them.
David_18
The 451 and 453 are worst than 450 for reliability ??

David_18
From what i see here, a lot more people have problems with the 450 than 451..
tolsen
The 451 suffers broken pinion drive on clutch actuator. Pinion is too weak and just snaps off leaving you stranded and no less than £600 out of pocket. The stop start 451 suffers from a really bad design pulley drive for the combined starter alternator causing belt to snap off. No fix to date that Smart has rolled out has cured the problem. There is no warning, not even a charge light, so drivers usually notice nothing before engine has overheated or self destructed. Repairs can come to thousands of pounds. The 450 however, is remarkably reliable as long as properly maintained. The best and smartest car I have ever owned. kdubya
The diesel 450 is by far the worst car I have ever owned. I do nothing but repair and maintain it, I have hundreds of man hours into it, and thousands of dollars. My Cadillac has over 250,000km, and I have done oil changes, brakes and a PS pump. My inlaws Corolla has 450,000 km, and has needed shocks and brakes..... I've never seen a car take so much and give so little. I love it though, don't get me wrong. Huronlad
The stop/start is not available in the US or Canada so is not relevant to this thread. Closing in on 140k km on my 451 clutch actuator. My 451 has been nearly bullet proof in comparison to my 450. It is so pleasant in the 451 to go more than a few months in between maintenance that would be required by the 450. The 450 is a very needy car.
