Alternator freewheel pulley - faster gear changes

OK, sad news, I only have one of the bearings as I expect the one furthest away from commutator is missing. The piece there the brushes ride on.   Hope I called it correctly...?

I have the other one it's a NSK  6008DU8   034   35mm od dia, 17mm in dia, 10mm deep, and ring thickness roughly 9mm.....it's still on shaft and I am not up to messing with it today sorry, still feeling weird after a while....sorry.

Guys I read this thread from the first page and I was almost submitting my order for INA 535 0059 10 when I finally read that this won't fit my 0.6 petrol Smart. So, please, is there someone who during all those years figured out a freewheel pulley that fit 2001 Smart 0.6 61 HP?

You need to talk to someone in England so to speak or Europe as we in Canada didn't get vehicle from what I know..? I could again be wrong....?   I expect Tolson knows the info you are seeking.

I had a similar thread on thesmartclub forum where we explored suitable free wheeling pulleys for the petrol 450. 
 

Due to constant abuse and negatively I never posted the final conclusion regarding suitable pulleys. 
 

Both the petrol 450 and the 452 have M17x1.5 mm alternator shaft thread size and 57.5 mm diameter 4 grooved pulley. 
 

There exists no suitable free wheeling pulley in that size. 
 

The only solution is to source a pulley as near as possible to 57.5 mm in diameter and machine alternator shaft to suit.  Alternatively, machine free wheeling pulley to suit alternator.

Maybe he works in a mine and hasn't got back to the surface yet? Maybe he's enlisted and hasn't got home yet? Who cares when he reads this helpful information, it helps everyone who reads it, imho.   This is how we grow as a community by sharing the very valuable information we have learned and collected over the decades.  Hoarding information helps no-one. 
One day everyone will need something and hopefully there will be a thread that directly helps that person.   Just my warped way of looking at it, Hmmmm....?

We have just read that other sites have disappeared into history never to be seen or used again, perhaps this is why they died...?  They were no longer helpful to their communities??

so first of all thank you for all your replies, some of them are very valuable.

 

Second I of course returned to see the replies, but for some reason the forum logged me off so it might seem I didn't come back but in fact I read the replies few hours after they were posted :)

 

Third and the most important point to actually add some value to this thread. I found this awesome website which has catalog of 1258 freewheeling pulleys and you can filter there by your parameters: https://as-pl.com/en/c/alternator_freewheel_pulleys_082 You just have to know O.D.1 is their code for diameter.

So I used the values you tolsen mentioned (thank you) and closes match I found is this guy: https://as-pl.com/en/p/AFP5048S It has M17x1.5 thread and diameter 57.5 mm. I know it has 6 grooves but well at least you can place the belt where it is best alligned.

When I was searching for pulleys with 4 grooves I found this candidate: https://as-pl.com/en/p/AFP5071S It also has M17x15 thread, but the diameter is 59.5 mm. It is difference about 3% so when the alternator with original pulley would be spinnig 10 000 rpm, with this pulley it would be 9700 rpm and it would be producing slightly less power. If this is a problem I don't know, but honestly I dont think so.

Both of those pulleys should be available in regular parts stores (at least here in Czech republic they are) and the prince is nice I think as well. I know you guys are using pounds so it costs about 20 - 40 GBP.

My plan is to order 1 of those (if I don't find closer match meanwhile) and try it :)

This is how a well oiled site operates.....imho.  People helping others without the need to be stroked so to speak for donating their valuable information. Also others adding to the pile of great info already there.  
This is maybe why this site is still here helping other Smart Car owners and not gone the way of the DO-DO....lol.


Please keep up the great work folks, we may be getting fewer as time goes by but at least we're still here.

I also keep written information that is offered up so when it's possibly needed in the future, it's still here and can be re-given if necessary.

I recently installed this pulley with the exact part number Tolsen recommended. Car does shift a bit faster and I feel like it the engine is a bit quieter. Not sure about the fuel consumption yet but time will tell.

This was done along side an alternator job and didnt take that much effort to be honest. 

IMPORTANT: Make sure you have the right tool to free running pulley installation tool for the job. Something that holds the shaft of the alternator in place as you thread in the center race of the new pulley.
