hot4smart
Took delivery of my new Smart early this year and it seems to have an issue with the amount of fuel I can put into the car. The most I have been able to fill the car up with is around 23 litres with the guage showing I have 3.5 litres left on reserve. The tank capacity is 33 litres shown in the owners manual. This puts me about 6.5 litres short. Mercedes has been looking into this issue, apparently I am not the only one seeing this. Last week they replaced the complete fuel tank in my car, they did not replace the in tank fuel pump. I drained the tank down again to 3.5 litres showing on the reserve, filled up and I am still approx. 6 litres short. Mercedes is again looking into the issue and trying to find a fix for me. Has anyone else out there had this problem and what is your dealer doing to solve it?
Huronlad
A known issue with the 2016 models, there is a fix. The members on sCOA has been talking about it for quite some time..
adelaide J
I also purchased a 2016 passion with a sport package. I ran mine down to 2.5 litres remaining and put in 25.6 litres. So I am short about 5 litres. Sorry to hear that Mercedes fix didn't work. Only heard of one in the USA that said his is reading correctly now. I hope to look into this in the spring. Just wondering if they gave you any software updates with the new tank?I thought they had to recaliburate the sensor in the new tank?? hot4smart
They did not mention any software updates when they installed the new tank, I will confirm that in the next few days when I talk to Markus at Mercedes London.
Passionate
We have a 2nd build Passion with the wonky fuel capacity/gauge issue. Just over 6 gallons was all it would hold after a low fuel notice. The car was given a new tank with the 'permanent' sending unit and a firmware upgrade at the local MB dealer this August. This didn't change a thing, really. Same readings, same capacity. The service rep said it does indeed hold over 8 gallons, keep driving it into reserve, not to worry. My plan is to just do so, with a small can of gas along, just to see where it does run out. I am aware of the in-tank pump tech, being cooled by the gas. P.
Leadwing
The service rep is correct. The gas tank holds 33 litres (8.7 US gallons) Possibly a faulty sending unit for the capacity gauge??
Passionate
Apparently the tank & sender are one unit, molded together. I don't think they'll pop for a second refit under warranty. It really is no big deal to us. P
Passionate
An update: It does hold a bit over 8 Gal, and when the gauge says empty it is. The readout is not linear, as it stays at full for some time, then rapidly falls. It is accurate towards the last remaining gas.
