Okay, so I’ve never made a post on any forum before but everyone in my life is so unhelpful so I desperately need some help or at least someone to point me in the right direction.

I have a 2016 Smart ForTwo Gasoline and it’s brakes are SHOT. They’re grinding and it’s reverberating throughout my entire vehicle and they need to be fixed, like, yesterday. But nobody seems to care enough to give me ANY advice.

I don’t know what I need, do I need just the pads or do I need everything? And if I buy the parts online, what do I buy?

I don’t want to go to the dealership because quite frankly they are the absolute worst people that have ever existed and they suck, and they’ll charge me a dumb amount when I could get the same thing or better elsewhere.

If I go to someone, who do I go to? I literally don’t know anything and I’m so frustrated because my brakes are sooooooooooo bad and nobody wants to help and I need help.

Someone, anyone, please tell me what I’m supposed to do.

Thanks, I’m so frustrated so I apologize if this doesn’t say as much as it should

go to midas or some other garage that specializes in brakes

i only say that because they might have stock and it sounds like you need rotors and pads awful quick

there is nothing special about changing the brakes ...the problem will be sourcing the parts

How much it is going to cost will depend on the source of the "grinding" sounds. if it is just the brake pads, it should be relatively inexpensive.  However, if the grinding is a result of the totally worn brake pads gouging the discs, you MIGHT need new rotors as well.  As LooseLugNuts mentioned above, any competent mechanic should be able to do the job and can tell you ahead of time if it is just the pads or more.

Thank you all so much for your help. I contacted one of my local brake specialists to see if they can work on smartcars (I’m the only smartcar driver in town) and they’re going to take a look at it tomorrow morning. I appreciate all of the feedback and it gave me a lot of guidance! Thank you.

I have one last question though: I took a photo of my rotors, (can’t upload because of 2MB max file size) and I noticed my passenger side rotor was super grooved and almost shredded looking! But the other rotor was super smooth and had very little wear at all. Looked very normal even though the other one is sooo horrible. Any input?

Here is a link to help with the photo posting.  http://photoposting.is-great.net/?i=3

The tool allows you to move a picture into their facility, and it will then create a proper link to paste into your post. This embeds the actual image into the post. It automatically sizes the picture appropriately. Follow the directions of the tool.

Once the tool creates the image link, simply copy it and paste it into your post where you want the picture to appear.

Sorry I’m no help with the brakes.

Nigel

When you get one side destroyed and the other good it usually means you may have a siezed caliper and they may want to replace it. Some shops might help you and try and rebuild it but with shop charges per hour now at such high numbers it might be cheaper to simply replace it? I bought new brakes for mine from our local parts place different up here in Canada but similar to UAP etc for $150 front pads and rotors if I recall corectly.....yes far more than an Americian vehicle etc but not that bad......somewhat. To unsieze a caliper you can simply try to use a large "C" clamp on the piston in the caliper and see if that loosens it, if you wanted to get dirty and had tools of some sort. I have found everything on a Smart seems to be a Torx, so unless you already have them, it may not be sensible to buy them just to see...?

It could be a good time to learn about mechanics and general maintenance...it's not rocket science and there's always plenty of people who are always willing to help when you are stuck. Just a thought...?   lol

How many miles are on the car?

If the car is still under warranty, a faulty caliper should be covered.  Damage to the rotor or pads due to the faulty caliper should also be covered.  If the dealer tries to tell you something different contact M-B corporate and file a complaint.

The car only has 25k miles on it. The reason I sound so uneducated is because, well, I am when it comes to cars. I’m a 19 year old female who knows very little about cars and my family is always busy and can’t really help with it at all. I’ll read over my warranty paperwork that I have and see what the terms and conditions are and then I’ll contact one of the other smart dealerships near me because I refuse to go back to the Portland one.

Anyways, this is the passenger side

And this is the drivers side
