Have you tried the liquid sealant that comes with the car and is stored in the passenger footwell?

Although I have not used it on my smarts, I have used it on other smaller tires and it appears to work quite well.

The foam storage insert in the passenger footwell also contains a small tool to remove the valve to allow the liquid to be inserted.

The tire is defiinitely past it's shelf life, It holds air for a while but besides the leak (which I would normally just fix myself) it's seriously weather fatigued. I had sit flat for a while. Also the fioam sealant etc is no longer in the breakdown kit area

Are these cars supposed to come with a jack?..lot's of hidden places ! If it's not in the car I should have a look at my folks place.

No jack no spare.  In the foam cover above the battery there would have been a bottle of sealer and an air compressor.

I have the compressor, it works well. I think I can hunt down a little scissor jack etc. no problem. Today I'm looking for tires and perhaps an oil change

There's some 155/60 R15 tires available. The sizes are exact but very close, could I use these on the front end? Seems likely

I guess a centimeter wider and very slightly lower (93mm vs 94.25)

instead of buying an oil sucker id recommend just ordering a new oil pan with drain from china

it takes about 30 minutes to swap

and the pan probably costs less than an oil sucker

looks like they boosted up the price last few months but still decent at around 50 after shipping

It gives me one wrench on start up (on the display) and has a -710 at the bottom

If it was showing -710  yesterday, it should now show -711 ... This is now counting up in days from when the oil change was due.

Oil changed with new filter installed. Only car I've owner where a litre of oil can cost more than a replacement filter. Hilarious!

Have a line on a couple of front tires.

Have the better condition new used front tires installed

Borrowed my brothers's code reader today and this is what it said

3 codes
1 exhaust gas recirculation - insufficient dected

2 exhaust gas recirculation - excessive detected

3 exhaust gas recirculation -sensor A circuit

Cleared the codes and took it for a drive, same codes came up again

Further research shows these codes to be related to the function of the EGR valve in one way or form.

OH BOY...!

Time to remove and clean out completely your EGR valve...(what a fine job...!)  Hope you have small hands, My meats got cut to ribbons while getting mine out, and I had to bend a wrench to get to one bolt. I also removed the entire system and blocked it off, made up a new replacement pipe, easy, and made up an emulator.  You will find that the EGR is plugged up something viscious if anything like my beaters was! Get some gas and let soak for a day or two if you want before going after the black goo internally. That is after you get her off ...lol.  I have a sonic cleaner and it took me hours to get it like near new again, but picking away using gas etc should work also.....it's just tedious work making sure the entire unit is cleaned out if you weren't simply getting rid of it.
Check out the threads about emmulators.....just saying...your call. It took longer to get it clean than making all the bits almost....and I'll never need to do it again! Removing it also frees up a load of space and also allows you to easily get near the intercooler. Something else to look at IF you haven't already.....????

And think of all the added horse power you'll unleash for enlarging the dia flow of the system without that ERG in the way!....lol.   Not sure there is a scale big enough, sorry small enough to be able to measure the increases...lol  But add that to a better air cleaner, smoother intake pipe, EGR replacement pipe, and a gutted Cat from your stock muffler or a glasspack muffler........you might be able to feel the actual difference I bet...lol.   I'll let you know....

I'm trying to sort out exactly what you are trying to help with?

It seems you are suggesting I do the EGR delete. This is done mostly to eliminate any future EGR problems has at best a laughable effect on the cars performance.

is that what you were trying to impart?

he is making 2 suggestions

one is to take it all apart and clean it

second is to remove it (but that requires an emulator to fool the computer into thinking it still has an egr valve)

ive cleaned mine a few years ago and have had no problems with it (never had problems ..just cleaned it while the engine was out for other reasons)

EGR removed, found to be stuck but not too horrifically plugged. Cleaned with brake cleaner till it the piston was moving easily and smoothly and most of the crud was gone. Re-installed with new air cleaner. Cleared the codes, took it for a couple of aggressive test drives including a blast on the freeway and up a big hill and now no engine light or codes. Little car seems peppier.

Welcome to the club

If you are serious about ownership.  Run the car over to Fast Eddy at Flying Tiger Developments in Richmond.  He is the local Smart Guru.  He will Give you an honest opinion on the car.  Also he has plenty of smart bits you can get for your car.  A lot of us over here use him some even drive in from the Okanogan.

Drain the excess oil off pronto being over filled can seriously damage the little diesel.  Oops missed the post where you stated oil change was completed.

Well I can generally determine if a car is running well. I haven't been to a mechanic for a car in more than 25 years and have never gone to a dealer but then I've always owned older used vehicles.

I took a look at flying tiger developments site and the prices for their smart car stuff seemed to be top dollar. Does the Eddy fellow have used parts for decent prices or is the website a fair representation of the pricing in general?

Good point. But the smart is ''quirky'' and someone who is very familiar with them can point out some potential problems.

eg. the wire loom rubs on the egr top hose ($130 to replace). The clutch actuator gets loose with wear and needs to be serviced.

The AC drain in the front clogs and then spills water into the cabin - often onto the Ebox. The headlight and fuel pump circuits often burn out the pins on the sam. The steering U joint needs to be lubed and tightened. etc...

I noticed the wire loom rub when I was servicing the EGR valve and elevated it. I can do a fix on the small rubbed part

Good to know about the other things. I'll keep an eye on them though my particular smart doesn't have AC

Thanks
