Welcome Super!

So are you thinking about a car, have one or? In any case - don't be shy - people here are very helpful and don't mind even the basic questions.

Cheers,

Super Dude, tell us a bit about yourself and your smart (or smart to be). In regards to the highway, it really does not matter, as once you hit 6th gear on the highway your not changing gears. I personally drive in the "manual" style, as it is my preference.

which one is better driving in the highway manual shifting or automatic?thanks!

Personal preference, I guess, and I prefer automatic. I think it does a better job than myself in shifting for the power requirements when overtaking and climbing inclines. Plus, it's nice to have that kickdown feature ready in case an emergency situation arises where you need additional braking or power for evasive maneuvering.

Welcome!

For optimal economy, shift into 6th at about 85 km/h on flat road. I shift manually on the highway and use softouch in the city.

Well - I go for shifting all the way. And I started out as someone that was scared of shifting. But let me tell you. When you're needing to build up speed to get onto the highway, shifting manually is your best bet. Yet - I find that depending on your speed range, to switch to auto and for the car to then bump down to 5th gear helps speed up the car.

PS. Tail winds are your new best friend :D

"Kickdown" usually refers to automatic transmission programming that will downshift in response to a sharp input from the throttle. It's for getting a burst of speed when you want to pass while cruising on the highway, not for engine braking.

I usually shift into 6th at 100 km/h, unless i'm on a really flat road or a slight decline. Even the slightest incline and the car will be begging me to downshift into 5th.

One of the cool things about having the smart touch is that if at any point you want to switch back to manual shifting, it turns off the automatic mode as soon as you shift yourself. That said, i hardly ever use smart touch on our car. (It wasn't an option we originally ordered.) I've maybe used it a couple of times when i didn't have a hand free to shift.

Welcome to the forum! Take full advantage of it by looking through the various sections. Be sure to fill in your "profile" with at least your city so we know where you are from! Got any more Q's? Just ask!!
