IMHO, the only system that works id the STAR system which the dealerships used back in the day. Yes it will hurt to buy at 5 times what you are thinking of spending. I have one and know many others who own them. They also have limitations and issues at times and have zero manual instruction or help as they are basically old units sold off which can never hit the internet again or be ruined when they start an update. BUT, if you use them wisely they do work and get 99% or what you want done. BUT, not for $240....sorry to say. Post up where you are and maybe someone here who owns a STAR can help reset your limp mode issues...? Again welcome.
goatman1
im in Surrey BC Canada. i went and tried my Blue Driver obd2 but it was useless except that it said it was made in France im pretty sure the youtube channel, Man Builds, said that after 5 drive cycles codes get cleared if the problem stops happening my motor is really clean, was a 1 owner car for the last 18 years and 160,000 kms/100,000 miles i think i just might tear it apart, do the egr delete and have a good look at the common fail components and the turbo
Willys
I did the exact thing you are thinking at 130,000 kms. It ran fine no issues. I can't leave things alone. I had read of the common faults for these engines etc etc and thought I'm not waiting for any of them to leave me stranded, so I tore into it. I replaced everything except the block, head, crank, crank bearing(simply because there wasn't any any where to be found and mine were still well into spec), cam and connecting rods.....everything else i replaced with new parts. And at the same time did the whole car the same way. It took me 4 years to do 6 months of my normal work schedule which was I used to restore or build a vehicle a year. Just as a hobby ... What i found was, seriously warped cylinders, worn valve seats, guides, rockers were a concern for cracking, oil pump sprocket and chain were also wear items, it took 3 over to get the cylinder walls straight again which was lucky because those were to only pistons I could find at the time in the world. I recorded the rebuild in pictures which you can find on this site in the wiki section. No description of what i was doing just a visual of what was done in stages. Mostly for anyone else who didn't know where things were on their engines when they went searching for parts and couldn't visually see them because the engine bay is so tight. So after 4 years of fighting with an engine which should run perfectly well it still smokes badly so much so it is still in pieces searching for the reason why, what happened to it? It has a thick white smoke issue which burns your eyes which normally suggests over fueling. That is where that motor sits today. I have since bought a good running engine and it is running in the restored car until I figure exactly what is wrong with a completely new so to speak engine. Yes i have built many engines before and have good success chasing HP etc. So this isn't anything special except it's a diesel. Enough about my issues....these engines seem to hate short running times as in just a short trip to the corner store so as the engine doesn't get a full heat cycle. This is what I have been told caused my badly warped cylinders and something you may look into...? IF you choose to do this, search out a german company called mw-smart to source your parts from. They sell new and used parts as they find them from old new stock from dealerships selling off their stock. They are good people but they have been burned by too many North Americans to trust us without up front payment. After they see you are honest etc they are more trusting of us. A real shame seeing as most people who need these cars to stay on the road are good people i hope. You also won't get more power to write home about, just a better running car in the end, fingers crossed. It's .8 of a litre in size so economy is the only thing to hopefully result from this along with longevity. BUT, if you are serious about keeping this car you should buy a STAR system for the diagnostics as nothing else will work as well. Good luck and start your own thread if you want to continue this road as it will be solely yours so to speak relating to your build. Which will be far better for you in the long run, imho. This project is easy, simply lego for adults and far better than the many other vises that drains one's bank account...lol.
goatman1
yes, i bought a motor from china using paypal but the seller wouldnt send it to me until i told paypal that i received it in good condition so they would release the money to the seller. the seller had been burned too many times by us north americans but the seller was kind of known by some members on a forum i was on so i did it and he got his money and i got my motor. so if i find a STAR and connect it to the internet it will die a delphi wont work on a 2006 an Autel was mentioned but... so basically if there was a newest latest greatest scan tool on a budget that worked, it would be known by members here thanks
Willys
A motor from China...Hmmm...? Interesting, ??? That's a first as I normally see England and Germany myself. The STAR used systems we can buy for our old cars, the M-3 multiplexer versions which are the best for our 2005-2006 diesels is an old version and it's normally being sold by someone who I will bet shouldn't be selling it. Use this information as you wish...? You need the STAR so you have to over look this imho. This also means it can't be allowed to try and contact the MB network as they know it hasn't been updated in years and they haven't been paid for those updates IF there are any for it? I highly doubt there are any and it works well enough as it is so why risk the price you paid for it? Just accept the situation or don't buy it.....goes for many things we could buy I'm sure, that we may need for our toys etc? I haven't heard of any other system that can do what a STAR can do, sure a few can do the basics but not get deep into electronics and re-teaching aspects. I have a buddy who owns a 4 bay shop and has a $10,000 scanner and it also can't do it all.....but if you know how to get around as a trained mechanic I'm sure you can figure out most of it so to speak? It just isn't worth it to buy another system imho that costs far more just to be able to hook into the internet system when you can get an older specific system and use it to it's fullest and then use your own computer not the STAR to research other things which this site can get you.? There are always computer knowledgeable folks who drop in and also a couple who are regular members here who say their systems can do what they need, but sooner or later they admit they need a STAR to get deep into the diagnostics etc. Just re-programing a set of key fobs requires a STAR, a few years ago I was standing at the parts counter at my local MB dealership and they had a key fob sign for $456 service....I mentioned in a laughing manner what's that for your top end models and he said NO, it's for the lowest car, a Smart Car!!!!! I started laughing a him saying he was nuts as I could do the same thing in 20 minutes and for a fraction of the cost! I nearly didn't get my parts as he said I had an illegal machine and I needed to hand it over so to speak. as if!!!! I had a $400ish Autel and it was good for breeding the anti-locking brakes system and a few other issues but useless for anything else on the Smart Car.

I have seen them go for far more. As far as I can see it's all there, but do not take my word for it. I do not want to be responsible if things go south so to speak...but I have the same thing minus the computer, mine uses a more modern pc with different software. Mine doesn't have those pictures of the vehicles just descriptions, Mine also doesn't read codes as in a scan test but has the rest of what is required. I read the codes using a cheap modern code reader and research the code issue using the STAR. This should do it all if it is what is advertised. Again good price and it all seems to be there but again don't hold me to it. I hate alli express personally but so many love it...to each their own. IF you plan on working on smart cars or plan to keep your car for years etc then you need one of these machines. Plain and simple no matter where it comes from. again in my humble opinion. OH...I didn't see anything about it being Dutch but it did show 21 languages...? Also the whole advertisement was in English wasn't it? OR did my PC translate it ????
