StalveyKyle Posted March 30, 2020 Posted March 30, 2020 Got in my car yesterday and started driving. Noticed it wouldn’t exceed 3000 RPMs. Turned it off when I got back and went out a little later to start it and it won’t start now. Drove fine and shifted fine other than not going over the 3000. When I turn the key now the fuel pump isn’t even kicking on. I read somewhere it could be the EGR. I just don’t even know where to begin without taking it to Mercedes. Quote
Nigel Posted March 30, 2020 Posted March 30, 2020 First the no start. You said you don’t hear the fuel pump. Read this thread ninety nine percent chance you will find it there. http://clubsmartcar.com/index.php?/topic/25663-sam-woes-and-how-to-cure-them/#comment-299934 Then do a search for cleaning the EGR and that is probably the power problem. Please let us know how you make out. Nigel 2 Quote
StalveyKyle Posted March 31, 2020 Author Posted March 31, 2020 Ok so I had the issue with the connector on the SAM a few months ago. Fixed that issue then. Assumed this was a similar issue so I checked all the voltages on both sides of the same and I’m still getting 12v out on the repair I made. The fuel pump just won’t kick on. I cleaned the EGR the best I could but can’t even test it because I can’t get it started now. I took off the rear panel and passenger wheel well. Checked voltage on the wires running to the fuel pump right there and got 12v. Unless it’s a relay not turning the pump on I don’t know what else to check. Quote
Nigel Posted March 31, 2020 Posted March 31, 2020 Did you check the voltage with a meter or an incandescent lamp? Using a meter will show voltage even if only one stand of wire is intact but one strand won’t carry the amperage required for the pump. Can you wire a supply and ground direct from the pump to the battery and test the fuel pump that way? Of course the ground from the pump could be bad as well. I haven’t seen anyone here post having a bad pump but you could be the first. Nigel 1 Quote
StalveyKyle Posted April 1, 2020 Author Posted April 1, 2020 Is there an easy way to access the top of the fuel pump? I would love to test with a temp ground to the battery. But as far as I could reach on the wire I was still getting continuity on the ground. Willys recommended I check all the ground pins around the car so I am gonna check those as well. Also I did testing with a volt meter. I don’t have a lamp tester. Quote
Nigel Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 I don’t know where you can get to the fuel pump harness. Time for one of the guys who work regularly on these cars. Maybe tolsen or smart142 can help. Did a little searching and see Tedder did a fuel pump and also found this http://clubsmartcar.com/index.php?/wiki.html/technical-wikis/450/how-to-removereplace-fuel-pump-r45/ Nigel Quote
LooseLugNuts Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 redneck diagnosis works sometimes sometimes a good hit will cause bad brushes to contact again bang on the bottom of the tank then turn the key on....if the pump works or makes a weird noise the brushes are shot and youll need to change it Quote
