Angelo
Hi , I own a 2013 Smart Fortwo passion . I am getting a knocking sound from the front end . I don’t know what side but it seems to be coming from the right . My mechanic checked the suspension and found nothing wrong . He thinks it’s the shocks or top plates . The springs are not broken according to him . Has anyone had a similar issue ? I don’t want to change shocks and top plates for nothing . Thanks

LooseLugNuts
first get a mat and lay down under the front and then switch to the rear while someone vigorously rocks the car in different directions ... also a test drive with a person who has good hearing usually helps narrow things down...i like to take my customers for a ride until we hear the noise and I dont tell them where i think i hear it until they tell me what direction they hear it themselves...i find this makes i much easier to locate hard to find noises for strut mounts i usually just visually inspect ...good ones will be nice and centered...then i stick a finger or two on the top bolt while holding part of my hand on a solid part of the body ..again getting someone to shake the car hard ...any movement is easy to feel holding onto the sway links is also a good ideawhile you pry them up and down...you will feel play easier than seeing it Edited January 19, 2022 by LooseLugNuts
MikeT
grab the top of the road wheel and pull vigourously in and out. If it clacks, it's either a ball joint at the bottom or loose strut nut at the top as Willys said.
Matt7280
Did you ever get to the bottom of the problem? Anti roll bar drop links?
