HOTRDD Posted May 6, 2023 Posted May 6, 2023 I have a 2006 fortwo diesel that my son basically did a full rebuild on. Cylinders, pistons, rings, timing chain and guides, valves, starter, alternator etc. Most it was for fun. But suddenly this week the car has lost all power. It will fire up and idle for about 20 seconds and then just dies. You can't move it at all. Since we are getting power to the fuel pump we think the fuel pump is just done. So I figure I'd replace the pump and filter right away and maybe the crank sensor if its accessible? BUT I've been searching for a place that sells fuel pumps and haven't found anything. Where are you guys, ordering things from? Any places in Canada? Quote
MikeT Posted May 6, 2023 Posted May 6, 2023 If you don't have an external fuel pump relay, do that. Check the SAM plugs for overheating. Quote
LooseLugNuts Posted May 6, 2023 Posted May 6, 2023 yeah check the wiring first...and do the relay mod if it hasnt been done yet for these cars the in tank pump is just a simple thing...i havent had the need to ever change one on a smart but any generic 12 volt pump should work because all it does is send fuel thru the filter and up to the high pressure injection pump...check ebay listings and youll see what i mean Quote
HOTRDD Posted May 6, 2023 Author Posted May 6, 2023 (edited) K we will drop the tank and check the fuel pump. It does seem to be providing some fuel but not a ton. Any chance you know the flow rate so I can grab a bottle and calculate it? We did the fuel pump relay about a month ago when we thought we were having fuel issues. Maybe we will just replace the fuel filter and if that doesn't help drop the tank and see what is inside. Any other items that might be causing this issue? Seems to start up and idle, but only for 10-20 seconds. If you try to accelerate it almost instantly dies. No matter what it won't idle for more than 20-30 seconds. I should mention that the fuel gauge or sending unit stopped working a while ago as well. Edited May 6, 2023 by HOTRDD Quote
LooseLugNuts Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 i have no idea about fuel rate ...personally id just use my own judgement on whether its enough...or deadhead it just to make sure it makes pressure at all...Tolsen would probably know specifics as for fuel gauge i remember one of my smarts had erratic readings ....adding kleen flo fuel additive fixed that problem after a few fill ups check codes maybe it will give clues....looking at live data when its running might help too to spot irregularities Quote
HOTRDD Posted May 10, 2023 Author Posted May 10, 2023 Well we put a new fuel filter in it tonight and cracked the high pressure lines until diesel came out. Car will fire up, idle for a few seconds and then die. If I rapidly pump the gas pedal it will idle erratically about twice as long. Next steps is to try and replace the crank shaft position sensor, but I think we need to throw the car on the hoist and drop the engine for that one. What else are we missing? Quote
tolsen Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 Specified feed pump pressure is 2 bar. Fuel sender units are now in short supply so if electric fuel pump indeed is faulty, you have to dismantle sender unit and replace pump for one that will fit. Suggest next thing to check is fuel pressure. I recall my pump managed 2.5 bar. Crank position sensor is often seized in its bore unless previous owners have taken the precaution to fit sensor with grease. I think access from above to the bolt that hold crank position sensor in place is somewhat compromised by EGR cooler which luckily mine does not have. I can therefore replace that sensor in about five minutes. Perhaps wise to get rid of EGR if it is still in place. Quote
450ken Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 2 Bar translates into about 30 psi that's plenty of pressure for a small electric pump to produce that would take significant current draw. Quote
