montypeel Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 Looking for someone who can clone my SAM unit in the southern Ontario area. Does anybody know of someone who does this that isn't the dealer? Specifically Niagara/Hamilton area. Many thanks. Quote
Willys Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 I think Glenn does it or used to, Smart142 I also have the STAR but am many hours away.....sad to say. Quote

Willys Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 What you want to do is install another SAM into your system correct? That can be done, not simple but doable. I'm not sure about any other way of cloning it...? The new to you SAM simply needs to be introduced to your speedo and ECU.....correct..? Quote

My 450 had a ecu fail (literally cooked a hole in it.) I have put the Sam, ecu and speedo in and got my car running but the donor Sam unit has issues. (Airbag not getting proper signal/voltage, softop switch not working ect.) I'm looking for someone local enough who can either: 1. Clone my old sam over to match my new ecu and speedo Or 2. Reprogram ecu to match my original Sam and speedo. Dealer was no help and I can't find anyone local. Can't safety the car till I clear up airbag issue. Quote
MikeT Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 So by transferring those three components over, they didn't recognize each other? Or they did but the airbag fault is the only remaining problem? I had a new SAM put in My Canada 1 by the dealer, and they gave me the old one. The only problem with it was a dead fuel lift pump circuit. Makes me wonder if I could reinstall it without issues..... I'll be keeping int anyway. Quote
stickman007 Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 If you wish to clone the SAM, you’ll need EEPROM chip reader and softwares to go with it. Or, with some desolderinf/soldering skills, you can just swap the EEPROM chip on the PCB. MBSTAR can do it the dealership way, but unless the SAM is “virginized,” you’ll have issues. Quote

If you send your old SAM to me, I can fix the fuel pump section of the circuit. But I’m not sure if it’ll still be plug and play as other modules may detect that it is different than your current SAM. 1 Quote
MikeT Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 OK thanks for the offer. I don't need it now but it might be good to have a spare in the long term. The part alone is like $1000 so even if a dealer has to recode it, it would cut the cost of that job considerably. Quote

I've tried looking up how to just swap the eeprom chips but I haven't found anything useful. Do you have a link? Quote

I swapped all 3 into the car but the Sam from the donor car has issues on the board with airbag and softop. I want to use the old sam as it's in better shape. 1 Quote

Me, Glenn....I have heard of a few more but don't know them or remember their names. You need to be sitting in the car when doing this work, maybe you could send the three items to someone to install in their car then program them together...? I do not know if that would work...? Hmmm...? Quote

montypeel Posted May 29, 2023 Author Posted May 29, 2023 How much would you charge to clone over my SAM? I could probably convince the wife to go for a nice drive... Quote
Willys Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 The only way I know how is to be sitting in the car needing either of the 3 parts to be taught to speak to the other two. So you would need to get that car to me...? Then wait until it's done, that time frame I can not guarantee as I do not do it often enough to be fast at it. Plus I'm about to embark on a trip across the country and up to the Arctic Ocean. Could be 2 months before I'm back here. Sorry. IF you haven't spoken with Glenn he is your better bet unless you can wait. OR better yet buy your own STAR and benefit from all it's uses. I built mine up with the sole mentality that 3 trips to a dealership or shop would pay for itself, then I found people wanting work done which also helped cover the cost. Seriously, your best way, especially if you like your SmartCar, imho. There are a few threads that i have pointed out exactly where I bought mine from etc etc, dig back and locate those and see..? The whole machine complete is roughly $750, IF you have an older Dell640 laptop you only need the software and multi-plexer C3 (I think it's labeled as, but it definately is the 3 version). I'd have to go through years of Paypal purchases to find it again, so searching here would be quicker. 1 Quote

stickman007 Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 Here’s the info on how to clone using eeprom equipments. Not expensive. https://blog.uobdii.com/vvdi-prog-tutotials-clone-smart-450-sam-motorola-9s12dg256-2k79x/ Evilution I believe has some info on swapping the chips. Good luck! 1 Quote
Mjolinor Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 The "chip" in the case of the SAM is a monster. More than 100 pins and not easy to do unless you do a lot of them. Quote
