Pinky247
Hey im a truely stump smart car owner. Im fairly capable of working on the smart car with some help and guidance. I have replaced the high and low pressure fuel pump, new fuel filter. New diesel fuel, new fuses, new battery. Altnator and starter tested both working. New glow plugs. Car will turn with quick start but once it burns off it stalls out. Before the car wouldnt turn over it did go in to limp mode (wouldnt go over 40)but i was able to drive manual (would go 80-90)home instead of automatic. Parked the car and then went to start again and it wouldnt. Help please i love this car but i have no clue where to look or what to do. Also if anyone knows a good honest machanic for a young lady driver i would be so thankful
Willys
Hello, glad to see you made it over....Jonathan. You showed a picture with a red wire attached to the burnt connector as if someone has already tried to do the fuel pump bypass mod. Can you show it again here with any other pics of where that wire goes to? It might be quicker to get you to go to the threads that deal with this mod. Fuel pump by pass mod. I will try and beat you to it....lol
Willys
Here is the description of it IF you follow that red wire does it lead to a relay and then to the fuel pump under the car? Edited May 11 by Willys
Willys
There is a good mechanic in London who we as a club in the area have used for years. Glenn is his name SMART142 is his name here. That is if you can't do the work yourself. I live a long way from you. Just under Lake Simcoe, an hour or so north of Toronto.
Willys
Do you have a volt meter? Does that red wire have 12 volts when you turn the key on meaning it is controled by the key and not on all the time simply powered from the battery. Some of those outlets on the side of the SAM are constant 12 volts and some are switch 12 volts. IMHO, you still need to open the SAM up and see how much damage is inside where that pin is for the fuel pump. There is a row of 10 or 12 pins and that row will cause many issues and are well documented here. on what they control and what to look for( cold solder joints, a very very fine crack around the pin) and what we do to repair them. If you can solder wiring you can repair it yourself. This is a common problem, same for the headlight pins, same type of repair, we bypass those pins using a relay etc. All well documented. I'm sorry I do not remember how to do this but I'm sure someone with more computer skills will chime in. Also there must be a thread dealing with this as it was a huge issue a few years ago when cell phones started having such good cameras in them, etc.
