RichHelms Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 OK. In a total moment of insanity today I bought a pocketbike. For those not familiar, these are real motorcycles, just very small. It fits in the back of my smart. I had to lower the smart passenger seat to let the handlebars clear. I am hoping to carry it to events on the bike rack. As it only weighs 58 pounds, the rack should support it. This unit has a liquid cooled 40cc engine. Quote
42Kruiser Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 But you do realize it may be awhile before you are allowed to go to town by yourself again. Quote
IMSMRT Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 Where is the rest of it? You do realize that you will be bombarded with Bubbaesque questions more than ever before if you put that bike on the back of the bike rack don't you??? S Quote
RichHelms Posted March 4, 2006 Author Posted March 4, 2006 Here is another pix of it from one dealer site. Quote
100MPGUS Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Do they make a diesel version? ;>) That looks like a real nice one, not one of the cheapo knock offs! What a sight that will be, driving somewhere in a TINY smart and opening the hatch to reveal a TINY motorcycle. Good luck! Quote
RichHelms Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 It is made in China but it is not a low end unit. I think the reaction at car shows will be so cool. I could see at the Woodward dreac cruise stopping, pulling it out of the back and driving around. What should draw a response. Quote
Evilution Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 these are real motorcycles In the loosest sense of the word, 2 wheels and an engine. exactly the same except for dangerous, noisy, not road legal, polluting, bad for your posture and make you look silly (even more silly than a real motorbike). Luckily the craze of these bloody things seems to be subsiding, you'd get a bunch of mad teenagers darting across busy roads, going to the shop on it, riding them around playgrounds and at events narrowly missing people and keeping them awake. There is nothing good about them that I can think of. Quote
mattdaddy Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 I wouldn't want to get hit on that thing... Nice buy Rich! Going to take it to get the mail? Quote
Diesel Dave Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Looks like great fun. Guess it didn't come in stream green eh? Quote
RichHelms Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 Evilution - they are not street legal in Canada. I live on a farm where I can ride it. My main goal is as a prop at car shows with my smart. I have ridden motorcycles for over 40 years. mattdaddy - Two points - no three. That is priceless Diesel Dave - It will probably end up Stream Green. Let the modifications begin. Quote
ValgardForkbeard Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 My brother-in-law won a pocket bike in a golf tourney; my sister thought it was the most ridiculous thing he ever won. My comment to her about it colour matching her car didn't help :-) The race track I volunteer at does not allow motorized pit bikes, so we don't see many of them there. However, at the Kiwanis (sp?) Safety City, they hold pocket bike races Wednesday evenings during the summer. I have been riding bikes for 30 years now, and am not likely to stop anytime soon. Keep the shiny side up MG Quote
RichHelms Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 The local go-cart tracks do pocketbike races Quote
Duck Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Congrads, Rich! Now we just have to build you a rack for it...! Maybe some time I could bring some extrusion and powerlocks over and we can whip up something out of Minitec (the stuff I built my board rack out of).-Iain Quote
RichHelms Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 I would love to do it. I put the pocketbike on the bicycle rack. My key concern is to put the bike on, it has to be on the outer slot. I think it is putting too much stress on the bike rack support. I had to move the wheel supports to inside of the connection post. You can see the end caps are off. Here is a pix of the bike just sitting on the bike rack. I wanted to see how it sat. The size works really well. The air will flow over it and the license plate and brake lights are visible. Quote
spinner Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Digging up a clip... Euro Meet 2005, Barrie, ON (QuickTime) (NOT WORKPLACE SAFE) Around two-thirds of the way in, out come the pocket bikes. The riders aren't too sharp, first taking them out on the road, then nearly smacking a car while doing a standing burnout. Quote
RichHelms Posted March 6, 2006 Author Posted March 6, 2006 Unfortunately there are idiots in any sport. The lead yellow one is the same as mine Quote
bsmart Posted March 12, 2006 Posted March 12, 2006 Nice Rich. Great idea to take it to events. That's something people will remember and talk about for weeks. I didn't buy one...but my little cousin has one and he let me put it in the back of my car while I was up in Edmonton watching the GP race. Quote
RichHelms Posted March 12, 2006 Author Posted March 12, 2006 Your picture posted here some time ago is what gave me the idea. I saved your shot and found that exact bike but in the end decided I wanted the liquid cooled unit. The only challenge I found putting it in the back was the handlebars. If I put the bike in the same as your shot and turned the wheel to the side, it fits. Quote
mkt Posted March 12, 2006 Posted March 12, 2006 Rich... you should find a way to attend Bike Week somewhere with the pocket bike and the smart.. lol Quote
RichHelms Posted March 12, 2006 Author Posted March 12, 2006 I am going to do the local car show which also has a bike show the next night. Should be a blast Quote
bilgladstone Posted March 12, 2006 Posted March 12, 2006 Rich... you should find a way to attend Bike Week somewhere with the pocket bike and the smart.. lolYou might want to bypass Sturgis though... Quote
bsmart Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 That will be priceless with the bike on the bike rack at the bike show! Wish I could see that! Quote
RichHelms Posted March 15, 2006 Author Posted March 15, 2006 Actually I found it fits in the back so nicely, I may just do that. The only advantage of the bike rack is I can lower the convertible top with it on. With the bike in the back I can't Quote
