Something new today, single horizontal bar in middle of the display

Recommended Posts

There I was minding my own business going about 80 in 5th gear and it just stalled, single horizontal bar flashing, followed by the temp blobs flashing and on the 2nd flash, the gas blobs got in sync with the temp blobs and flashed together. Slowly pulled over, slid the shifter in neutral but as the car slowed, it was never in neutral and chugged to a stop in gear.  Is the Smart just being a Smart?  Does it know I am looking at another vehicle?  I did the Smart thing, pulled the key, waited 20 seconds, started right up and was back on my way.  It did it again 5 minutes later  and nothing since then.  My search only gave me the 3 flashing bars (which has happened to me twice before).  Comments?

Hmmmm.....??????

I hope mine's not as Smart as your's......I too am looking at another car....lol.

I am after something that doesn't require you to become a computer genius to be able to enjoy it.   No, not getting rid of mine yet but it has crossed my mind I will admit....!

Sorry, no I haven't experienced this issue myself. Hmmm....?  I would be searching every ground pin location for  bad ground. Then if that doesn't help start removing every sensor to see if any connector is corroded or not in tight? Then I'd be going after the SAM and ECU to search for more corrosion issues. Just make sure you disconnect your battery before touching anything ECU related. It has capacitors which hold a charge and it is capable of frying itself if you short any pins out. Ask me how I learned this lesson...!!!!!

Keep us informed....and what are you looking at that the Smart isn't happy about...?   lol

That's what I experienced when the coolant level was low, or when air got in the system.

No CEL only means that the ECM did not logged a code. This could potentially be that the ECM shut off and that’s why it did not log any codes. If the ECM drops out, the CAN will have issues. Perform a load test to all your power/grounds to the ECM.

If you have a scanner that’s capable of connecting to your ABS, airbag, SAM, or cluster module, you might get fault codes that will point to the culprit to the CAN issue - which module is dropping out.
