DId you mean actual white smoke..magic smoke is an electronics joke. My car makes lots of black/brown smoke

 

I did borrow a diesel compression tester with some adapters. However reading on the evilution site has me wary of trying to remove the glowplugs, though they offer a a method. Perhaps I will try anyway and if by some wretched chance I break one off, That can be my sign to move on

IF you can get some heat into the engine do it before attacking the glow plugs, but if not a solid 10mm deep socket and careful pressure should release them. Do it like a tap and out a bit then back in to try and keep the fine threads of the plugs intact.

Just wondering what happened with your engine ? I feel you went into a rabbit hole with the injector
