Guest pawpac Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Hello all. I got my smart from G & K on 5 May. Before it was off of the truck, there was a group of 10 or so people surrounding it, asking questions and taking pictures with their cellphones. I have not had much chance to drive this wonderful car since I am having problems getting a title/ registration here in Pennsylvania. Apparently I am the first one in the state to apply for a title for this car as a purchase from G & K. They are treating it as an import since it was never titled in the states before I purchased it. I have been sneaking out anyway, much to my wife's worry. Looking at removing the roof padding as soon is it is titled and inspected. Could use some help finding information about the smart radio five the car came with. Any information would be appreciated. Quote
ValgardForkbeard Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Welcome to the club. Isn't beaurcracy fun :-) There is a "How To" forum, if you can post a detailed question about your radio there, I am sure someone can answer. MG Quote
MikeT Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Man, that is a bummer, so how does the PA DMV register a new BMW if it's never been titled anywhere in the USA before?!?Hope you get them seeing common sense soon! Quote
RichHelms Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 What part of PA? I was born in Phily, grew up in Pittsburgh and went to Clarion University. Quote
Guest pawpac Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 What part of PA? I was born in Phily, grew up in Pittsburgh and went to Clarion University.I am in Mount Penn which is suburb of Reading. If you look on the PennDot website they have a long list of paperwork you need to submit. Pennsylvania and common sense have never been seen in the same room. Have been working with AAA in Reading. The personnel there are wonderful and they tell me PennDot is very backward in what you need to get a title. Estimates are anywhere from 4 to6 weeks to complete. Just returned from driving some of the back roads around here. It is such fun to drive. Quote
RichHelms Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 My wife and I drove my smart to a wedding in Basking Ridge NJ a few weeks ago. That is about an hour and a half from you. Good luck with PennDot. I lived 20 years in PA and know how frustrating they can be. Quote
Commander Cody Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 The Cmdr. went to Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster. Quote
smartdawg Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 hey pawpac! Welcome to the site. If you're ever in Baltimore and want to check out a diesel smart, just PM me and let me know when. Quote
Guest pawpac Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 I will check you out if I get to Baltimore. Only about 2 1/2 hours away. Have gone to Inner Harbor several times. Very nice. I am assuming that you could not register your diesel in Maryland If you could I would like to know how you did it. Pennsylvania is so far behind the times in many ways. Quote
smartdawg Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Sounds good. My smart is still licensed and insured in Canada. Apparently I have one year before this is no longer legal however no docs were ever filled out and the border guard literally didn't care what I was driving when I moved (only if I was packin' booze and smokes). My insurance company on the other hand has given me a 4 month grace period before my premium will likely shoot way up or need to be renegotiated. Inner Harbor is loads of fun. I'm in the Canton area which also has a pretty sweet pub life. Fells Point is a good place to kill a day too. Quote
