frankd53 Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 My 1989 model year car was built in July 1988 and first sold in September 1991. It has 355,000 km on it now, virtually problem-free. It's only the three-year trade-in people who would (eventually) take a hit on a 4 year old "3 year old" car.No disagreement here on that.I assume you are referring to your Peugeot 405, which must be one tough vehicle, and/or you take exceptional care of it. MikeT Posted March 4, 2007 Author Posted March 4, 2007 Yeah and I bought it in 1994 with under 35 K km, so got an extra-good price Quote
Speedie Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Mercedes has a whole list of procedures for the smart while in storage so don't worry - they are not sitting there getting flat spots on the tires.Cheers,Cameron Quote

Duck Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 That is great! I expect in April there will be even more, with the $2 000 kickback coming into effect! -Iain Quote
NJV Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 It's probably been asked before, but do the sales numbers reflect the date that the order was placed or the date that the car was picked up? Probably doesn't change the numbers for 2007, but in 2006 it probably does.Would our smart show up in Jan 2006 when we picked it up, or in Oct 2005 when we ordered it?Does this increase reflect the $2000 federal rebate? Quote
smartzuuk Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 I wouldn't be surprised to see 300 walk out the door in April. That $2000 has got to be an incentive.Mike. What is the combined EU economy on the gasser we're said to be getting? If it's 5.5 or less, the new car will also get $2000 rebated by the Feds. Quote
Diesel Dave Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 I've been watching my local dealer. Cars have barely moved there for months. Two weeks ago, a very large shipment arrived. The next weekend, most were already gone. I also see them on the roads more now. Things do seem to be looking up. Quote
MikeT Posted April 3, 2007 Author Posted April 3, 2007 Mike. What is the combined EU economy on the gasser we're said to be getting? If it's 5.5 or less, the new car will also get $2000 rebated by the Feds. The 71 HP version averages 4.7 L/100 in the EU cycle (overall). I doubt the Transport Canada rating would be over 5.5 average for it. The engines will be identical in Europe and Canada, as far as we know. So, yeah, $2K rebate. If sales go on at this pace, the 450 stock will be exhausted completely a month or two before the new model arrives.....unless they have some more hiding in Europe (which we are checking on). So I guess the advice for lurkers who may be considering a smart and definitely want a diesel, IT'S TIME TO STRIKE! And if you have a company, ask for the smart Canada $1000 fleet/business discount. Quote
MikeT Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 So with 205 sales this past March, we have a little less than six months' supply, running out a month or two before the new 451........but I (like Keith) would suspect that sales in the coming months may pick up beyond that, to over 300, due in no small part to the federal government incentives.I wonder if they'll totally run out of new smarts in 4 months....and have a 4 month wait for the new model....Or are there any more CDN 450s left in Europe? Tune in next month for another episode! Quote
Grubbie Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Hello Mike Tyou mentioned: " And if you have a company, ask for the smart Canada $1000 fleet/business discount"Please tell me more.I never heard about this.Does buying one smart for a business count for the business discount? I don't think one vehicle would count as a fleet.take careGrubbie Quote
MikeT Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 I was told about this at the Vancouver Auto show by a sales representative from smart....it is offered by smart Canada, not the dealer.....that's all I know about it. Ask your local sales staff. Quote
NJV Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 At DMFC in Edmonton, they have quite a few smarts left, but only one or two of them is are Passion's. Quite a few Pulse's and Pure's though. Quote
MikeT Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 On a comparative sales note, I read today that smart sold 55,000 smarts in France over the period 1998-2006, 3900 (7%) of which had cdi engines. Most of those seem to be in Paris. So we have nearly three times as many cdis in Canada!! smart Fance is looking to have 10% cdi penetration in the new car. Curiously modest, because other French car sales are usually 60% diesel. So Canada is doing well, VERY well....per capita, similar to France. Quote
Hammer Smart Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 And if you have a company, ask for the smart Canada $1000 fleet/business discount.Hey Mike, vas is das? Quote
MikeT Posted April 6, 2007 Author Posted April 6, 2007 Just what it says; I am reliably informed that smart Canada offers a cool $1K off for business buyers (not individuals). Quote

With gas only coming next year, I guess we won't know anytime soon. Quote
MikeT Posted May 2, 2007 Author Posted May 2, 2007 252 new smarts were sold in Canada during April 2007. Although 252 is down on April of last year, it is a good performance, on pace for 3000 sales annually.... Quote

Polar Attack Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I guess mine won't count until it gets off the train and I pay for it. Oh well, i'm already helping the May Sales. Quote
MikeT Posted May 2, 2007 Author Posted May 2, 2007 As of yesterday midnight, there were 1588 unsold brand new smart model 450 cdis in Canada. That's 6 months' supply, at last month's rate of sales. It's going to be tight, if no more are en route. Quote
danno Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Where do they keep them all - Halifax? Or are they building up dealer inventories? Quote
MikeT Posted May 2, 2007 Author Posted May 2, 2007 Nanaimo has at least 12 new ones in stock and I think Victoria has more like 25....some are still on the ocean headed to Halifax, or being stored there. Quote
MikeT Posted June 3, 2007 Author Posted June 3, 2007 smart sold 532 cars in Canada in May 2007! That beats the previous record month by 76 cars! May 2006 saw "only" 456 cars being sold. So, if you want a diesel smart, get into your dealer post-haste! There were only 1056 unsold smarts remaining in inventory as of last Friday. They may ALL be sold by the beginning of August. Quote
