deezle Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Looks like that $2000 rebate is working it's magic. Good for smart---good for the environment. If all of the available old generation diesels are sold out earlier than anticipated, I wonder if it would it be possible for them to move the Canadian launch of the next generation gas forward to late summer to fill demand. Quote
MikeT Posted June 3, 2007 Author Posted June 3, 2007 I'm sure the dealers would like that, but my guess is it'd not be possible. I think everything was predicated on a year-end launch. Quote
ianjay Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Greetings:I'm not surprised about the increased May sales given May gas prices. I'm almost tempted to buy another diesel, but I'm hoping the new car will bring us better creature comforts and a reasonable amount of funkiness. Definitely not going to sell the current car in any case. Cars this size in the city are a no brainer and I really like not putting $75 into the tank like my other car and truck. Even the little Escort wagon sucked back $39 on Saturday. Ouchee.I love my smart car,Ian Quote
Dang Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 I was thinking the same thing. It would be interesting to track gas prices to sales and see if they line up.532 in one month is amazing, considering Mercedes was hoping to sell 800 all year when it was introduced.Later! Dang Quote
joker Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 silverstar mb in surrey had the biggest stock of smarts I had seen. I would say they have about 15-20 of them. Took my smart there for service and started walking around and saw all these little smarts. You cant see them from the road because of all the cedar hedges. Quote
Francesco Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 West Island MB had them all lined up side by side on the ramp leading down into the basement pre-owned MB showroom. The ramp is behind the building, so is also not visible. They have about six on display outside, a nightrun and a pulse in the showroom, and maybe 20 more on that ramp. Quote
MikeT Posted June 5, 2007 Author Posted June 5, 2007 Oh, can you get the VIN and */50 of the nightrun?please? Quote
Francesco Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 I was in for the rust stains today and saw it was 10/50, but didn't get the VIN. Parts manager (acting service manager) was very cordial and talkative, and authorized the smart service rep to go ahead and order a new roof bar and tailgate seal. We continued to chat for a bit while walking around and checking the (still-there) stream green cab and the nightrun. He did a better job of being a salesman than either of the two smart ladies. Maybe not as good as the hot, young Barbie-doll smart girl whom I met for my first test drive a couple of years ago, though... I'll get the VIN for you when I go back in for the parts. Quote
MikeT Posted June 5, 2007 Author Posted June 5, 2007 Thanks for that, but we already have #10/50 spotted. Darn, I was hoping you had scored a new one Quote
skylark8503 Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Here's a quick chart I made up. Sorry for the crudeness. I did it on Paint....Blue line- smart salesRed line- Average CDN Gas Price Quote
MikeT Posted June 5, 2007 Author Posted June 5, 2007 People are so-short sighted, and that chart proves it! At least it proves it intuitively.... Quote
smartzuuk Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 It looks convincing, but remember too, winter is both lower gas prices, and lower vehicle sales, traditionally. Still.... it looks good. I'd like to see an SUV chart... can you get any data? How about tossing in some other cars? Quote
skylark8503 Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 I probably could make a chart with more cars, the problem would be to find the data on number of cars sold. Quote
MikeT Posted July 4, 2007 Author Posted July 4, 2007 Another fantastic month for sales! That is the good news. The bad news is that there were only 587 unsold smarts left in Canada as of July 1st. So we're getting to the short strokes, the bottom of the barrel, <insert cliché here>, and they will undoubtedly be completely sold out during August, which is a few months before we get any new ones. The local dealer now has only a couple of cars left and there is plenty of talk about customers rushing in to get the last of the diesels. It will be interesting to see what kind of smarts will be the last ones left. Pures with no A/C I'm guessing. Quote
Grayce Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 When I picked my car up last week the dealer only had 3 left, none had A/C. Quote
Francesco Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Yep, when I picked mine up on May 30 there were almost two dozen at MBWI. I went back a couple weeks later to ask a question, and they were down to about a dozen. I drove by yesterday and there are two out front (where there had been six) and I couldn't see any around the back. Quote
smartzuuk Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 The budget has been passed... there is no hopefully anymore. In the fall, the mechanism for submitting your request will be set-up. Quote
Sagittarius30 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 When I picked my car up last week the dealer only had 3 left, none had A/C.Haha , I picked up the last coupe in Ontario. So the 3 left is now down to 2 (which are both cabrio). And you're right, mine doesnt have A/C which I dont mind at all since I never use it; so is just extra weight to my little 40hp engine. I won't be surprise if they don't even have those 2 left since I've seen all the Smart promotions come off from most the Toronto MB dealerships. Quote

They each add up to $21,000 before tax and frieght & PDI. Quote
MikeT Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 319 smarts were sold in Canada in July 2007. That's 15% better than July 2006, but sales year-to-date are lower by 11% compared to a year ago (not bad, considering they're still selling 2006 models!). So how many are left? By my calculations: there were only 268 unsold new smarts available in Canada as of this morning. They should all be sold out by the end of this month. Quote
