A leading light in battery technology - Ann Marie Sastry

5 posts in this topic

I happened upon a youtube video featuring Ann Marie Sastry on a panel discussing the evolution of rechargable battery technology. The depth of her knowledge was impressive. A search of the ClubsmartCar site, using her unusual last name as the search key, found nothing. An Internet search for "ann marie sastry youtube" came up with many hits. I've only viewed a couple of them so far, but I thought that CsC members who follow posts in the Electric Drive forum should be aware of her and her contribution to battery development.

Copy and paste the search criteria to a search engine, and see what I mean.

Ann Marie Sastry Background:

Dr. Ann Marie Sastry, Ph.D. co-founded Sakti3 in 2008 and serves as its Chief Executive Officer and President. Dr. Sastry served as the PI and Co-Director of the Keck Center for Nanoscale Sensing and Modeling of Intracellular Transport, along with her leadership of grants and contracts with DoE, the Army Research Office, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, NSF, and the Ford Motor Company. Along with her research work, she has created durable curricula to support critical cleantech development. In 2007, she conceived and founded the University of Michigan’s Energy Systems Engineering Program, the first Master’s degree of its kind in the nation, and a global program dedicated to providing graduate education in vehicle electrification technologies and clean grid technologies. For three years, from 2007 to 2010, she served as the founding Director of ESE, in which time the program grew from an initial enrollment of 9 students in its first semester, to an enrollment of over 150 students. Dr. Sastry is the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Mechanical, Biomedical and Materials Science at the University of Michigan. In her laboratory numerical simulations, and advanced materials characterization and design approaches have been applied and fundamental problems in applied mathematics, biology and electrochemistry. She has pioneered new models for industrial/university/government/foundation collaborations on technology, and in 2009 co-founded the GM/UM Advanced Battery Coalition for Drivetrains where she continues to serve as the UM Co-Director. She serves as a Director at Michigan Economic Development Corporation. She has been a Technical Advisor at Powerstorm Holdings, Inc. (a/k/a, Powerstorm Capital Corp) since February 20, 2014. Her credentials include several of the highest honors in her field, including the 2007 ASME Gustus Larson Award and the NSF's Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 1997. Dr. Sastry holds Ph.D and M.S degrees from Cornell University, and a B.S from the University of Delaware, all in mechanical engineering

I think we're on the verge of a few new and improved battery technologies. Commercialization is always the challenge. Elon Musk has done a good job, but he's not the end-all be-all.

If anyone has access to a Toronto Star subscription there is an interesting article in the business section about Jeff Dahn, a physics professor at Dalhousie University. He and Tesla have entered into an agreement to build a better battery. Dahn is a well regarded expert in lithium ion batteries and his work attracted Tesla. Fine tuning the package and getting more range is the ultimate goal. Something to hope for with Canadian content! :icon_rolleyes:

The article appeared on Monday and was titled "Powering the future".
